CAHS Special Edition 2025 Newsletter Recognition Ceremony
Recognition Ceremony
A note from Dean Orlikoff
Greetings Allied Health Sciences Pirates,
As we move into the heart of our summer semester, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the very successful commencement and CAHS recognition ceremonies. It reminds us all of why we do what we do, and how it all relates directly to the mission of the university. The pride shown by our students, their families, our faculty and staff fills me with tremendous gratitude for the great effort all around.
Although lengthy downtime is rarely available in our college, the summer months do represent a time to contemplate what lies ahead for the 2025-26 academic year. I am delighted that Dr. Buddo will continue his wonderful work as our Provost as we look to shaping the ECU of the future.
Our new R1 status now places us arrrrgh-uably among the top tier of research universities. It is my belief, however, that we got where we are in a uniquely ECU way—producing impactful research to advance our mission of student success, outreach, and regional transformation. Integrating research and scholarship with academics and clinical training within a multidisciplinary context is a powerful thing.

Words of Wisdom from Alumni Pamela Pureza, M.S., CCC-SLP
Ms. Pureza, who served as the ECU Class President in 1999, was scheduled to deliver a speech during the university’s commencement ceremony when it was unfortunately interrupted by rain. Unable to find the original speech, Ms. Pureza had the opportunity to share a message on navigating this chapter with optimism and confidence while navigating change during the College of Allied Health Sciences Recognition Ceremony on Saturday, May 10. Drawing inspiration from the well-known “Wear Sunscreen” speech popularized by Baz Luhrmann, Ms. Pureza shared timeless advice and reflections with graduates. You can listen to the full version of the speech by searching Baz Luhrmann – Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen).
