Subject: Campus-wide planning meetings for fixed-term faculty

Sent on behalf of the Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion’s subcommittee on Fixed-term Faculty Issues. Please direct any questions to Professor Sambuddha Banerjee (banerjees17@ecu.edu), member of the subcommittee.

Dear Fixed-term faculty (FTF) members,

We hope you all are doing well. Recently, the Faculty Senate DEI committee created a subcommittee to look specifically into FTF issues in ECU. This committee is made up of three FTF from different disciplines. As an information gathering session, we scheduled two separate listening sessions this semester:

Session 1: Tuesday, November 7, 2023 from 3:00-4:00 PM in Speight 129

Session 2: Wednesday, November 8, 2023 from 4:00-5:00 PM in Bate 1031

Please note that these meetings will not be recorded. The goal for these listening sessions is to hear faculty concerns and issues related to fixed term status and DEI to gather information (see below for detail). The information collected from these meetings will be used to shape new policy. For this purpose, we request participants to think over the following few issues. This does not mean that we will not be discussing any other issue during these sessions, instead, we wanted to provide some directions to start the conversation. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
FTF subcommittee, Faculty Senate DEI committee

Advancement – What do you think about the opportunities offered to fixed term faculty for advancement in rank? There are welcome adjustments in the tenure decision expectations since the pandemic. Are there similar provisions extended to FTF renewal/advancement process in your unit/school?

Representation in unit personnel/decision making committees- Are FTF represented in the personnel and other heavy lifting/career decision making committees in your unit/school? Is this something would like to see happen?

Climate – What do you think about the cultural climate at ECU, in your college, and in your department? (This also includes issues like award nomination and highlighting FTF labor by the respective unit/school)

Policy – If you were working on university policy for fixed term faculty, what improvements would you propose?

Support/mentoring (especially towards new FTF)- If your workload has increased since the pandemic, what type of systemic support/mentoring was provided to you to deal with the increased workload?
