PeARL Lab Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions are there and how long does each one last?

For the I-C-FUN project, there are 16 total visits– 2 pre-assessment visits, 12 training sessions, and 2 post-assessment visits. The pre-assessment visits are 2 consecutive days. The 12 training sessions are 3 times a week on alternating days for 4 consecutive weeks.  Each session lasts between 2.5-3 hours.

For the HABIT project, there are 9 total visits– 2 pre-assessment visits, 5 training sessions, and 2 post-assessment visits. The assessment visits take 3-5 hours each and the training visits are 7 hours a day for 5 consecutive days.

How does ischemic conditioning work?

A blood pressure cuff is placed on the arm or leg. The cuff is inflated to a level that restricts blood flow to the limb for 5 minutes. Then, it is deflated for 5 minutes, allowing blood flow to return. This process is repeated for a total of 45 minutes. The child is monitored throughout the entire treatment.

What might my child feel during ischemic conditioning? Are there any common side effects from the RIC cuff?

The majority of children tolerate the RIC cuff very well and do not complain of pain or discomfort during the procedure. They may feel some numbness/tingling from the reduced blood flow. Although it is possible to have discoloration from the cuff, it is uncommon.

I-C-FUN project: What if my child has to miss a training session?

Ideally, the child will be available for all training sessions, but if the child must miss a session for reasons such as illness, we can reschedule the session.

I-C-FUN project: What should I expect during the pre/post-assessments?

The pre-assessment visits usually take longer than the training sessions. We do not perform ischemic conditioning in these sessions, but instead we collect baseline information on the participant’s walking patterns, muscle power, and balance. After the 12 training sessions are complete, we perform the same measurements again to see how the participant’s muscle power, walking patterns, and balance has changed.

I-C-FUN project: What should I/my child expect during the training visits?

The first 45 minutes of each visit is the ischemic conditioning. Then, we complete power training using the leg press machine, 15 minutes of gait training on the treadmill, and finish with balance training. We progress the training each session by increasing weight on the leg press and the treadmill speed. Breaks are taken as needed, and we try to make each session fun!

I-C-FUN project: What should I bring for the training sessions?

You are not required to bring anything for the training sessions. We will provide a snack and water for participants, but you can bring your own if you prefer. The ischemic conditioning involves 45 minutes of sitting still, so many children also bring a book, iPad, or other toy to keep them occupied during this time.

I-C-FUN project: If my child is not randomized to the experimental group, is there still a benefit?

Yes! Regardless of the group they are in, each participant still receives the same power, balance, and gait training.

Who can work in the PeARL lab?

The PeARL lab team consists of PhD students, master’s degree students, Doctor of Physical Therapy Students, and undergraduate students. For more information on open positions click here.

What should I expect as a student working in the PeARL lab?

Students assist with assessments, training sessions, and data collection/entry for the ongoing clinical trials.
