Student Funding

Funding may be available from a variety of sources including research grants at the College level, university research assistantships, and department research assistantships. All students who apply are considered for funding.

College of Allied Health Sciences Thesis/Dissertation Research Grants

The CAHS Thesis/Dissertation Research Grant is designed to support research activities by current
graduate students in the College. A maximum of $20,000 will be allocated from the CAHS Dean’s
Research & Indirect Funds each year for these awards. Each student may request up to $5,000 in
grant funds. Eligible budget items include support beyond which is available through the
student’s department. The CAHS Thesis/Dissertation Research Grant will not fund salaries or
consultant fees, nor will it fund travel costs for presenting at conferences.

Who May Submit a Proposal?

Any student enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program in the College of Allied Health Sciences
who is completing a thesis or dissertation are eligible for a CAHS Thesis/Dissertation Research
Grant proposal. Graduate students who have an approved thesis or dissertation proposal [i.e.,
prospectus] are eligible to submit a grant proposal for consideration. Students will need to
provide a copy signed by their Chair and committee members indicating the thesis/dissertation
proposal has been approved.

Submission Deadline

Proposals may be submitted throughout the year.

What to Submit

Students are required to submit proposals in the following format. Online electronic submissions
are preferred. Submit your proposal including the cover letter to wrighth@ecu.edu.

  • Cover sheet that includes a 50-word abstract, signatures of thesis/dissertation chair and
    committee members indicating the proposal has been approved
  • Itemized budget
  • Budget justification explaining each item requested. Salary, conference travel, and
    software available on campus for student use will not be considered.
  • Project narrative that includes the following and does not exceed 8 pages, double spaced:
    • Significance of proposed research
    • Goals, objectives and timeline
    • Research design & methodology
  • Letter of support from the chair of the thesis/dissertation committee

Grant Management

CAHS Thesis/Dissertation Research Grants are administered in accordance with established
university fiscal procedures and policies related to sponsored projects. All funds must be
expended within a year. The following conditions are required and the recipient must accept
these conditions at the time of the grant award:

  • A Final report submitted to the CAHS Office of Research summarizing the project
    activities and expenditures within one-month following expiration of the grant funds.
  • Any and all documents, papers, and publications associated with the activities supported
    by the grant award must acknowledge the CAHS Thesis/Dissertation Research Grant
    Program.
  • Oral presentation of the findings in a public forum, such as the department-specific
    Research Day or ECU’s Research and Creative Achievement Week
